Grief Outreach Center Helps Grieving Children With Loss

Tricia McClam tells the story of a fourth grader in east Knoxville who shows up early for an appointment in her school’s library. When asked why she’s there, she says, “I’m looking for my friend.” Her friend is a graduate student who meets with her each week, reads to her, plays with her, and listens to her, as part of a grief outreach program begun in the fall of 2008 by the University of Tennessee. The children in the program are dealing with major, usually stunning, instances of loss and grief. They face circumstances that involve divorce, abandonment, suicide, murder, custody battles, or a parent who’s been taken off to prison. Read More

Chen is QUEST Scholar of the Week - 11-17-2009

Guoxun Chen, an assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition, recently received the prestigious Young Investigator Award from the Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism, American Heart Association, as well as a Scientist Development Grant of $308,000 to support his research on the roles of vitamin A in the regulation of sugar and fat metabolism. His future research will focus on the roles of vitamin A in the development of metabolic diseases. QUEST, UT Knoxville's comprehensive research initiative, has selected Chen as its Scholar of the Week. Read More

Child and Family Studies receives $1 Million Dollar Grant

Dr. Brian Barber, Professor of Child and Family Studies and Director of the Center for the Study of Youth and Political Violence has received a $1 million grant from the Jacobs Foundation of Switzerland to study the long-term well-being of Palestinian youth. This is a four year project entitled, “The Impact of Political Conflict on Youth:  Assessing Long-Term Well-Being via an Event History-Resource Model.”    Read More

Visiting Scholar Discussion and Seminar

Dr. Leah E. Robinson from Auburn University will be conducting a “Brown Bag” discussion with students on the topic “Why Research Matters and How Do I Get Involved?” from 12:30-1:15 PM downstairs in HPER room 22. From 11:15 AM-12:05 PM she will be lecturing in ES 100 (232 HPER) on a topic related to physical activity among high risk groups.

Finally at 3:35 PM she will be presenting in the research seminar on the topic “The Lasting Effect of Psychosocial Determinants on Lifetime Movement, Physical Activity, and Health in High Risk Populations." You can view more information here.

UT Retail Faculty Rank High in Research Productivity

The amount of research being done by retail faculty at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, ranks in the top 20 internationally and in the top five nationally, according to published studies recently done by two members of the Retail, Hospitality and Tourism Management department. Read More

Student Awards Celebration

On October 13 the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences held the annual Student Awards Celebration at the University Center on the Knoxville campus. The event honors students in the College who have received a scholarship or fellowship and gives those students the opportunity to meet and thank the donors who make the awards possible. Thanks directly to our donors, over 280 students received scholarships or fellowships that totaled just under $660,000. While each scholarship or fellowship varies in the selection criteria, the recipients are all students of true accomplishment and promise. You can view a photo gallery of the event here.

CEHHS Staff win Volunteers of the Year Award

Jamia Stokes, CEHHS Coordinator for Recruitment and Retention, and her husband Eric Stokes, Assistant Director for Undergraduate Admissions, have been selected to receive this year's Knoxville Area Urban League's Volunteers of the Year Award.  This recognition is presented annually at the Knoxville Area Urban League's Equal Opportunity Awards Gala.  Jamia and Eric have been volunteering with the Urban League's National Achievers Honor Society program for the past three years.  In their role as volunteers they have assisted with planning academic and cultural events for high school students to help them prepare for college. 

Partners in Sports Fall Conference

The ESLS Partners in Sports program will be hosting their 7th Annual Fall Conference on Oct. 22 from 8:30 to 12:30 at the Wolf-Kaplan Room in Neyland Stadium. Learn more about this conference.

McCallum is QUEST Scholar of the Week

R. Steve McCallum, professor and head of the Department of Educational Psychology and Counseling, so far this year has co-authored three articles in refereed journals, two book chapters, three papers at national conferences and two papers at an international conference in Alicante, Spain, and has three publications in press. Partners in Sports Meeting

Partners in Sports will have a meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 4 p.m. in HPER Room 335. Professor Larry Brown will be our guest speaker, presenting on the topic of resumes. Mr. Brown’s specific style of resume building has been touted as “guaranteeing a call-back” during the job application process. He will explain this professional format and exactly why it works so that you, too, can get a step ahead in your job search.

Robert L. Williams (EPC) Selected as Quest Scholar of the Week

Robert L. Williams, a professor in the Department of Educational Psychology and Counseling, has been leading a graduate-student research group that so far this year has published five articles in major peer-reviewed journals. The doctoral students in his research group examined the instructional format of a large UTK educational psychology course and the psychosocial characteristics of the students who took the course. UT's John Antun is Tennessee Hospitality Educator of the Year

John Antun, assistant professor in the retail, hospitality and tourism management department and director of the Culinary Institute at UT Knoxville, is the Tennessee Hospitality Educator of the Year. The award was presented to Antun earlier this month at the annual meeting and trade show of the Tennessee Hospitality Association. Read More.

UTK Sports Program signs MOU with UWI-Mona

This spring Dr. Fritz G. Polite signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of the West Indies in Mona, Jamaica. The signing of this agreement will help to advance the education of UTK Sports program students in several ways. The first is the exchange of students that will allow for a unique ability to enhance students cultural competency. The other is the exchange of faculty, scholarly activity and more specifically research potential. Read more

Learning Problems? UT's KLASS Center Ready to Expand Client Load

As the new school year begins, the Korn Learning, Assessment and Social Skill (KLASS) Center at UT Knoxville is prepared to see students, from preschool to college, who have academic or social problems that prevent them from succeeding in school. The KLASS Center was launched early last year after the college received a $2 million gift from UT supporters Pam and Tom Korn to open a center dedicated to helping students who are struggling in school. Wine and BBQ Classes


Starting this August, The Culinary Institute in the Dept. of Nutrition will be offering a series of wine courses. John Antun, founding director of the Culinary Institute, says “the wine program is a natural outgrowth of the culinary program.” Aimed at the novice wanting to learn more and increase their appreciation for wine as well as food service professionals wanting to expand their knowledge. Classes will be taught by Carol Costello, an International Sommelier Guild Graduate. Also, planned for October 15-17, the institute will host the first BBQ School. This two-and-a-half day class, instructed by John Autun and Billy Bob Billy (legendary 25 year BBQ competitor, instructor and author), will be all hands-on, covering meat selection, preparation, food handling, spices and cooking. Assistant Professor Dr. Clare Milner gave an invited keynote lecture to over 280 delegates from 32 countries at the 27th International Conference on Biomechanics in Sport, held August 17-21, 2009 in Limerick, Ireland. Read More
