Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of English Education
The College of Education, Health and Human Sciences at The University of Tennessee is seeking an assistant professor to be an active part of its teacher preparation program in English education in the Department of Theory and Practice in Teacher Education. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Position begins August 2010.
The College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences is a multidisciplinary unit with 150 tenured/tenure-track faculty members, housed in 7 departments. The Department of Theory and Practice in Teacher Education offers programs of study that lead to initial teacher licensure in many areas as well as an undergraduate program in educational interpreting, a graduate level urban specialist certificate, programs leading to several teaching endorsements, masters and educational specialist degrees, and doctoral degrees.
The graduate English education program prepares masters students, educational specialists, and doctoral students for careers in teaching, leadership, and research in secondary schools, teaching colleges, and research universities. The successful candidate will join a collaborative, interdisciplinary faculty committed to improving public education through exemplary teaching and applied research.
Responsibilities include engaging in rigorous scholarship and pursuing external funding to support research agenda; supporting the graduate program in English education through teaching, advising, and coordinating field placements and intern supervision; developing collaborative relationships with local schools, teachers, and community members, and providing service and leadership to local and national professional organizations. The successful candidate will be expected to be involved with partner schools. Collaboration with other departments in the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences is encouraged.
Qualifications: Applicants must: ·
- hold a doctorate in English education or closely related field, or nearing completion of a doctorate*
- have successful English or language arts teaching in grades 7-12
- demonstrate evidence of strong potential for scholarly productivity
- demonstrate potential to generate external funding through grants and contracts
- demonstrate potential to achieve state and national visibility through a clearly defined research agenda
- demonstrate ability/commitment to work with diverse student/family populations
Desired qualifications include experience in urban environments and schools; experience in grant writing; a demonstrated commitment to social justice and critical pedagogy, and teaching and research interests in writing/composition theory and pedagogy and/or multimodal literacies/technologies and learning environments.
